On March 13th of 2020, the Novel Coronavirus disease, COVID-19 was declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization. I found myself, like many others around the world, stuck at home with nowhere to go and nothing to do. With beaches, schools, restaurants, and whole cities on lockdown, my passion for photography inspired me to explore the world in isolation. In April I took a solo road trip up the California coast starting in Venice Beach and ending in San Francisco. I took my Nikon F4 and 12 rolls of black and white 35mm film (some expired... some new). I went with a goal to capture the empty surf and city cultures. Most beaches were either closed by law and some were empty for the sake of people wanting to stay healthy at home. Few crossed both boundaries and were able to catch a few waves for themselves. It’s hard for any surfer to pass a big swell, and there just so happened to be one in the peak of the pandemic.
